Ümit Boyner, head of the Turkish Industry and Business Association, or TÜSİAD, has said the organization is concerned about the lives of laborers working in Libya due to the violence and political turmoil in the country.

“We’ve received a variety of information from our members operating in Libya,” Boyner told the Hürriyet Daily News and Economic Review, speaking after the Good Enterprise Summit held in Istanbul.

“Right now the safety of the laborers is more important than the economic loss and political consequences of the event.
“We do not even know what conditions the 25,000 Turkish workers in the country are in right now,” said Boyner, supporting the Turkish government’s quiet stance on the Libyan protests compared with its reactions to the recent turmoil in Egypt.

“We do not know for certain whether the construction sites will continue operating or not,” Boyner said.
She said Turkish banks might consider supporting Turkish construction firms operating in Libya especially related with repayment of credit.

“First, we should evaluate the economic loss in the region,” said Boyner, adding that there are long-term financial commitments of Turkish firms and various measures need to be taken to lessen the affects of the economic loss caused by the tension in Libya.

Talking to Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review, Boyner said, “Turkey generally invests in risky regions of the world.” She said Turkish investors envisage the risk in such regions. In response to a question about the firms with no insurance for their investments in Libya, Boyner said, “Turkey has always enjoyed the benefit of being the forerunner in risky countries, as risk management places great importance on looking at the developments in the region.”

According to her, the rising tension and revolts sweeping the countries of North Africa and the Middle East were “unavoidable” as the demonstrators seek “a better distribution of wealth among the people.”
