ÇORLU, Tekirdağ - Hürriyet Daily News

Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, known for producing iPads for Apple and personal computers for Hewlett-Packard, has launched production on Turkish soil.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the facility in the northwestern province of Çorlu on Friday, Foxconn Turkey’s general manager said the plant will produce HP desktop PCs for Turkey’s immediate region.
“Ninety-five percent of the production will be exported to North Africa, Middle East and Europe,” said Tuna Kardeş, adding that the annual output would reach 1.5 million units. The number of workers will increase from the current 300 to 3,000 when the facility starts operating with full capacity.
Total investment at full capacity is expected to reach $60 million.
Speaking to the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review, Kardeş said that the most of the components will be imported. “The Turkish automobile sector also started the same way, but now there is also a Turkish automotive supplier industry,” said Kardeş, adding that in the long run Turkey might boost its electronic components industry.
Responding to questions over a series of worker suicides last year at Foxconn plants in China, Kardeş said Foxconn employs more than 900,000 people in China. “The satisfaction of our employees in this facility will be the top priority,” Kardeş said, adding that the facility has been attracting many jobseekers in the northwestern regions of Turkey.
“We would like to turn Turkey into a technology exporter to neighboring countries,” said Binali Yıldırım, the minister of transportation; as he spoke at the opening ceremony. “The investment of Foxconn and HP is a big step toward achieving this target.”
Ertuğ Ayık, the general manager of personal systems at HP Turkey, said the Çorlu facility will be a base to export desktop PCs from Turkey to the region. Turkey’s experienced and qualified workforce was a key reason for Foxconn and HP choosing Çorlu, he said.
