Turkey should help rebuild Iraq with new investments in energy, construction and banking, according to Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, who visited the Independent Industrialist’ and Businessmen’s Association, or MÜSİAD, in Istanbul Tuesday.
After a private meeting with industrialists, al-Hashimi said he had invited the group to invest more in Iraq, like “big brothers,” in order to rebuild the infrastructure of the country and launch joint projects.
“We need everything Iraq, without naming them I could easily say that opportunities are there, ready for Turkish businessmen across all sectors,” al-Hashimi said during a press conference. “Our banking system works through U.S. banks and I think Iraq needs the expertise and know-how of Turkey to create an efficient banking system,”he said.
Ömer Vardan, chairman of MÜSİAD, reiterated Turkey’s stellar performance in economic growth. “Turkey is the shining star in the region,” he said, adding that one of the reasons for Turkish stability comes from an increasing trade volume with neighboring countries.
“MÜSİAD centers located in the eastern provinces of Turkey, such as Mardin, Urfa and Diyarbakır, acted as the engines of increasing trade between the two countries.”
“Turkey and Iraq have common goals in the region. Through cooperation, the potential of the region could serve the benefits of both nations,” al-Hashimi said, responding to a question from the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review. “One of the pending issues on the agenda is a free trade zone with Turkey.”
The Iraqi official also said Turkey is active in energy investments in his country. “Turkish companies’ expertise and knowledge is significantly important for Iraq,” he said. “There are already many Turkish companies with investments in hydro energy and oil.”
Turkey increased the volume of exports to Iraq to $5.12 billion in 2009, up from $3.91 billion in 2008, according to official data. In the last seven months of 2010, export volume reached $3.18 billion.
Turkey imported $952 million worth of goods from Iraq last year, down from $1.32 billion in 2008. In the past seven months, Turkey imported $549 million worth of goods from Iraq.
