The Kaya Group, which manufactures industrial ropes and provides training, safety and consulting services, has launched production of “neo-solid” rope material with an investment of 1.5 million euros.

Turkey for the first time is producing neo-solid material, which extends the lifetime of ropes that are used mainly in sailing and yachting, according to Güher Türker, the general manager of Kaya, speaking to reporters Wednesday.

Noting that the company has 30 years of experience in rope production, she said: “We had to import neo-solid for many years, but now there is no need for that.”

According to Türker, neo-solid doubles the lifetime of ropes by providing “total protection” from strong sunlight and seawater. The production facility is in the northwestern province of Gebze.

Talking to Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review, Gülsen Kaya, a board member of the group, said the group has reached annual revenue of 12 million euros. “Nearly 8.5 million euros of this amount is attained through corporate occupational safety services and training courses given to companies such as Vodafone,” she said.

Türker said the new products would be on exhibition at the Istanbul Shop & Miles Boat Show, one of Turkey’s leading international fairs in the yacht industry, which will showcase the world’s luxurious boats. The fair will be held Oct. 20-25 at the MarinTurk Istanbul City Port in Pendik.

One of Kaya’s new products is the special “helicon” helmet that has stronger resistance than average helmets on the market. Developed through high technology, the helmet has combined resistance capacity of a mountain climber’s helmet and a typical miner’s helmet. The product will be launched in the market before the end of the year, Türker said.

The Kaya Group manufactures high-quality, internationally recognized ropes according to locations and requirements of the occupation. The group produces ropes for the military, for extreme sports, yachting, sailing, fishing and mining. “Kaya is the sector leader in rope production and exports to Germany, Italy, Croatia, Saudi Arabia, Umman, Kuwait and Egypt,” Kaya told the Daily News, adding that Iraq has started to import all kinds of ropes from Kaya Group recently, too. “We export to 28 countries and we are pleased to see that our neighbors are interested in our products.”

The Kaya Group reached a total export value of 1.2 million euros last year. “We expect to reach 2.1 million euros this year,” Kaya said, adding that the group has the potential to increase its exports to 2.9 million euros in 2011. Noting that the group also has indirect trade links with many countries, she said: “If we consider our indirect exports, this amount could rise by nearly 50 percent.”

The Kaya Group also exports ropes that carry bombs for U.S. fighter jets, fireproof ropes for the South Korean fire brigade, parachute ropes for the biggest European manufacturer of military parachutes, and fireproof ropes for civil defense and evacuation purposes for an Israeli company.

Founded in 1980, Kaya provides consulting, training and safety services to corporations, as well as marine docks. Board member Kaya said everyone has to be trained and educated about safety rules and precautions in emergency situations.

According to a report released in April after the Fifth National Occupational Health and Safety Conference held in the southern province of Adana, every year nearly 40,000 workers are wounded due to poor working conditions because many companies still lack proper safety precautions.

Noting that the Kaya Group also provides consulting and training services for work safety in seven countries, Kaya said the group currently is training employees and employers of a shopping mall and an airport in Libya to raise awareness on workplace safety.
